Beyond Gravity Expands Satellite Dispenser Production Capacity in Sweden to Meet Growing Constellation Demand
Satellite constellations are changing how the space industry works: hundreds of satellites, built in series and launched dozens at a time. Beyond Gravity, a leading space technology company has expanded its site in Linköping, Sweden, where it manufactures the dispenser systems that carry these satellites into orbit and release them one by one. From next month, the site will be able to produce nearly 200 dispenser modules per year, doubling the current capacity. The largest customer is Amazon Leo, whose initial broadband constellation of more than 3,000 satellites utilizes dispensers from Linköping.
For decades, satellites were built one at a time. Today, satellite networks such as Amazon Leo require hundreds of near-identical satellites to be launched in rapid succession, with each rocket carrying dozens of them. The dispenser, the structure that holds the satellites in place during launch and releases them into orbit in a defined sequence, has become a series product. Beyond Gravity’s site in Linköping has been at the center of this shift: in 2022, Amazon awarded Beyond Gravity a major contract to design and manufacture the dispenser systems for Amazon Leo, a low Earth orbit satellite constellation that will provide fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world. Amazon is deploying an initial constellation of more than 3,000 satellites and has selected Beyond Gravity to develop and manufacture the custom, scalable dispenser systems that can accommodate multiple medium- and heavy-lift launch vehicles. In 2024 the company inaugurated a new production hall in Linköping designed for serial production. The latest expansion further increases capacity and reinforces Beyond Gravity’s role as one of the space industry’s leading centers for industrial-scale production of satellite deployment systems.
Newly added hall with new machinery for serial production
Beyond Gravity has expanded into a new hall adjacent to the 2024 production building, increasing the Linköping facility from 12,600 m² production area to approximately 15,000 m². The company has integrated an adjacent facility into its existing manufacturing footprint. The newly added hall is equipped with advanced manufacturing capabilities, including a new high-precision milling machine, which mills carbon fiber and aluminium to very tight tolerances. The milling machine also drills precise holes in the dispenser, these holes are used for bolts and other assemblies. As of October 2026, the Linköping site will have the capacity to manufacture 192 dispenser modules per year, up from 96 today. 192 dispenser tier modules correspond to approximately 48 flights depending on the configuration.
For Dr. Barbara Frei-Spreiter, CEO of Beyond Gravity, the expansion is about more than floor space: “With the expansion of our state-of-the-art production facility we are setting new standards to scale production in the space industry. Our Linköping site is a showcase for serial production, scalability, enabling us to support the growing demand from satellite constellations.” Currently 350 people work in Linköping.
“Accelerating the deployment of Amazon Leo”
In 2022, Amazon selected Beyond Gravity to design and manufacture the scalable dispenser systems for Amazon Leo, its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite broadband constellation. The contract was the largest in Beyond Gravity’s history. So far, 396 Amazon Leo satellites have been deployed into space, all of them with dispensers from Beyond Gravity. “As we accelerate the deployment of our Amazon Leo constellation, reliable and scalable dispenser systems are critical to maintaining our launch cadence,” said Melissa Wuerl, Director of Launch Systems at Amazon Leo. “Beyond Gravity has been a strong partner from the start, and doubling production capacity directly supports our ability to put more satellites into orbit, faster. We’ve also been working to increase the number of satellites each dispenser can carry, so we’re deploying more per mission than when we started. With 396 satellites now deployed and an increasing pace of launches ahead, having a supply chain that can keep up with our manifest is essential.”
World leader in satellite separation
In total, technology from Beyond Gravity released around 1,700 satellites into orbit. “We are the leading provider of satellite separation systems for commercial launch vehicles”, said Ulrika Unell, Vice President Separation Systems in Linköping. The dispenser and separation systems ensure that the satellite and launch vehicle remain securely connected on their way into space and that the satellites are precisely released into orbit. Beyond Gravity’s dispenser systems allow multiple satellites to be separated in a specific sequence to achieve exactly the right orbit. They have been used worldwide for programs such as Galileo, the TerraBella constellation of Earth observation satellites, the Canadian Radarsat constellation of Earth observation satellites, or the Eutelsat OneWeb internet satellite constellation. Beyond Gravity’s dispensers are particularly suited for large satellite constellations where a large number of satellites must be placed within a short period of time.
